With the cooler weather we’ve had most of the spring, everything seems to be a couple weeks later then we’re used to. Normally June 1 would be right in the middle of the Bluegill spawn but it’s really just starting now. They’ve been hiding for the last few weeks with anglers catching one here and one there but not much for numbers. Starting this weekend however they’ve been really getting into them. Bluegill and Sunfish are some of the most fun this time of year and it’s pretty easy fishing requiring no special equipment. Just worms and bobbers work for most, a great way to kids and newcomers into fishing. Look for them along weed edges next to sandy flats.
Bass fishing has improved since last weekend as well. Many can be found in shallow water attending beds and the shallower weed lines. Soft plastics like Wacky worms, Senko’s and Tubes are a good way to lure them in. Walleye fishing has been slowly moving to deeper water the last week. Trolling crankbaits is still doing the trick but soon trolling or drifting with Crawler harnesses will be the main way to catch them.
The colder weather didn’t just effect the fishing this spring. Mushroom hunters wondering the woods looking for their favorite fungus also had a tough time. Much of the beginning of May had near freezing temperatures which did no favors to anyone. But keep looking, now we’re into the time when the big Whites or Yellows can be as big as soda can. Some guests of ours at the resort this weekend found nearly a cooler full of monsters.
Our 2019 8th Annual FREE SUMMER FISHING CONTEST has been underway for a week now and we’ve already had some really nice fish come in.
