Saturday, February 1st is the NASF Ice Fishing Contest. The ice looks like we’ll be in good shape for the weekend especially with temperatures in the teens during the week. Currently there is a heavy layer of slush and snow on the two lakes but it is starting to crust up from the top down creating a double layer. Right now if you’re on a high spot you could be on as much as 10″ of ice, but if you’re standing in the slop it is probably closer to 7-8″.
We’re hearing of mixed bags of Crappie and Sunfish coming from in front of the coves on Lake Mitchell with the occasional Pike being caught on a Tip-up. Behind us and Mitchll State Park anglers have been sorting through Perch and catching some Walleye along the drop offs. Lake Cadillac has been having some decent catches of Crappie and Perch off from Kenwood Park especially in the morning and first light.
Some of the surrounding lakes are finally starting to get some attention. A few guys have got out onto Portage Lake in Manistee County but mainly staying pretty close to shore before the ice thickness tapers off.
